US facing missile shortage problem due to war ‘dragging on’ in Ukraine

The United States is reportedly experiencing a significant depletion of its missile stockpiles, particularly advanced interceptors like Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems. This shortage is largely attributed to the prolonged conflict in Ukraine and extensive use during a recent conflict with Iran. Assessments indicate that a substantial portion of the pre-war inventory for these critical missile defense systems has been expended, raising concerns about the nation's readiness for potential future conflicts.

In response, the U.S. Department of Defense has initiated multi-billion dollar agreements with defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, to significantly boost production of Patriot and THAAD interceptor components. The goal is to triple the manufacturing capacity for Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) interceptors and quadruple THAAD system output. Despite these efforts, experts warn that fully replenishing these depleted arsenals to pre-conflict levels could take three to five years or even longer due to extensive manufacturing lead times, industrial bottlenecks, and the complexity of these advanced weapon systems.

The scarcity of these interceptors has had a direct impact on Ukraine's defensive capabilities, with reports indicating a substantial decrease in Western missile interceptor supplies to Kyiv in 2026. This has left Ukraine more vulnerable to Russian ballistic missile attacks. While the U.S. has expressed commitment to addressing the shortfall, the long timeline for rebuilding missile inventories creates a "window of vulnerability" and highlights challenges in sustaining high-intensity operations across multiple theaters.
