Third "Heat Dome" Expands Across US, Threatening 70 Million Americans

A significant heatwave, marking the third "heat dome" event this month, is currently expanding across the central and southern United States, impacting roughly 70 million Americans. This high-pressure system is trapping dangerously hot air from the Gulf of Mexico coast through the Great Plains and Midwest, with temperatures projected to reach 95-105°F (35-40°C). Some areas in the southwestern desert could experience temperatures as high as 120°F (48°C), while western Nebraska might see 108°F (42°C). The elevated heat, compounded by high humidity and insufficient nighttime cooling, is expected to persist into the coming week, posing severe health risks.

Excessive heat advisories are in effect for the affected regions, urging precautions, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with pre-existing health conditions. This follows earlier heat domes in July that led to the cancellation of Independence Day events in the East and brought record-breaking temperatures to Montana. In fact, preliminary reports suggest at least 70 fatalities in the U.S. linked to extreme heat earlier this month, a figure experts believe is likely an undercount.
