5 family members found dead after flash flood in a scenic Utah canyon, authorities say

Five members of a single family, including a Utah firefighter, tragically died in a flash flood that swept through a scenic canyon in southern Utah on Friday. The victims were identified as Provo Fire Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina Long, and their three sons: Reid, Thayne, and Gage. The family had been enjoying a day of hiking and canyoneering near Sunglow Campground in Wayne County when heavy rains caused the sudden and devastating floodwaters.

Authorities responded to the area near Bicknell on Friday evening after a body was discovered, subsequently locating additional family members through search and rescue efforts over Friday and Saturday. All evidence indicates the family succumbed to the rapid flooding. Their daughter, who was not with them on the outing, is the sole surviving member of the immediate family.

The Provo Fire Department expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Captain Long and his family, with tributes and support pouring in from fire agencies across Utah and the wider community.
