Washington state wildfires force 60,000 evacuations; arson suspected in Spokane blaze

Wildfires are currently devastating Washington state, particularly impacting the Spokane area, where approximately 60,000 to 67,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes. The rapid spread of these blazes, fueled by high winds and arid conditions, has resulted in the destruction of over 600 structures, including residences and businesses. Three major fires—the Old Trails Fire, the Autumn Lane Fire, and the Fairview Fire—are active in the region, with the Spokane fires remaining uncontained as of early August 2026.

In connection with the Old Trails Fire, authorities have arrested a 37-year-old man, Aaron F. Farinacci, on suspicion of first-degree arson. Farinacci was taken into custody on Monday, August 3, 2026, after witnesses reported his suspicious behavior near the fire's origin, and he was found in possession of waterproof matches and a butane lighter. This incident has led Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown to describe the situation as the "worst natural disaster our region has faced," as numerous other wildfires continue to burn across Eastern and Central Washington, causing widespread unhealthy air quality.
