Spokane residents flee as wildfires destroy homes; arson suspect questioned

Devastating wildfires have swept through Spokane, Washington, destroying hundreds of homes and displacing tens of thousands of residents. As of Monday, August 3, 2026, an estimated 600 to over 1,100 structures were consumed by three major blazes in and around the city, prompting some residents to describe the scene as "like a war zone" or "like a nuclear bomb going off in our neighborhoods."

In response to the widespread destruction, authorities arrested 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci on Monday, August 3, 2026, charging him with first-degree arson.
