Arson arrest made in connection to devastating Washington wildfires as officials race to contain flames

Authorities in Washington state have apprehended a suspect in connection with the devastating wildfires currently raging across the Spokane area. Aaron F. Farinacci, 37, was arrested on Monday, August 3, 2026, and booked on suspicion of first-degree arson for allegedly starting the Old Trails Fire, which is the largest of three blazes impacting the region. He is being held on a $1 million bond. Law enforcement officials initiated an investigation into Farinacci after a witness reported seeing him kneeling near the origin point of the fire, and he was later found in possession of waterproof matches and a butane lighter. Authorities also noted Farinacci has a previous manslaughter conviction.

The widespread fires have caused immense destruction, obliterating at least 700 to 1,110 structures, including homes and vehicles, and necessitating the evacuation of approximately 67,000 residents. Many returning residents have discovered only charred remains of their properties. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has characterized the event as potentially the worst natural disaster in Spokane's history.

Firefighting crews are actively working to contain the extensive infernos, making some progress aided by recent cooler temperatures and increased humidity. However, officials anticipate a return to warmer, drier conditions later in the week, posing ongoing challenges to containment efforts.
