These intense weather systems, formed by extreme smoke and heat, can produce lightning, strong winds, rain, and even fire tornadoes, ascending to altitudes of 30,000 to 50,000 feet into the atmosphere. The ER-2, a modified U-2 spy plane, flies at approximately 60,000 feet to collect real-time data on these phenomena.

The primary objective of this NASA mission, known as INSPYRE, is to measure and map these severe fire-driven storms to improve forecasting models. Scientists aim to gain a better understanding of how wildfire smoke and heat impact aviation safety, contribute to fire spread, and alter atmospheric conditions. The data gathered from these flights over active wildfires, such as recent missions above British Columbia, are crucial for enhancing climate predictions and informing future wildfire management strategies.
