WNBA condemns ‘bad-faith’ efforts to fuel transgender player debate

The WNBA has publicly condemned what it terms "bad-faith efforts" to ignite a debate regarding the eligibility of transgender players, stating unequivocally that the league currently has no such concerns. This official stance emerged following a virtual gathering of the league's anti-hate task force, where discussions encompassed a range of issues, including pervasive online vitriol and the topic of transgender athletes.

The league's collective bargaining agreement stipulates that only players who are women are eligible to compete in the WNBA, though it does not offer specific language concerning gender identity or sex assigned at birth. The ongoing discourse intensified recently after Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham publicly voiced her opinion on barring transgender women from women's sports. Further fueling the conversation, former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White announced their intention to enter the 2027 WNBA draft, claiming to identify as women in what they described as an attempt to challenge the league's eligibility criteria.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert previously circulated a memo to teams, acknowledging the complexity of the subject and affirming the league's dedication to engaging in thoughtful dialogue with all stakeholders, including the Players Association. The Players Association also issued a statement, highlighting its commitment to diversity and inclusion and asserting that its members would not be exploited as "political pawns." The WNBA has clarified that while there have been players assigned female at birth who later identified as transgender or nonbinary, no transgender woman has ever been on a WNBA roster.
