Thai court sentences two Uyghur men to death for 2015 Bangkok bombing

A Thai court has sentenced two Uyghur men, Adem Karadag (also known as Bilal Mohammed) and Yusufu Mieraili, to death for their roles in the deadly 2015 bombing at Bangkok's Erawan Shrine. The attack, which occurred on August 17, 2015, claimed the lives of 20 people and injured over 100 others, making it Thailand's most severe bombing incident. Both men were convicted of premeditated murder and attempted murder for their involvement.

The verdict, delivered on June 11, 2026, concludes a lengthy trial that spanned nearly eleven years. Proceedings faced numerous delays, including disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic and difficulties in securing appropriate translators for the defendants, who are ethnic Uyghurs. Prosecutors alleged that Karadag planted the explosive device, while Mieraili was responsible for assembling it and delivering it to the scene.

Despite the court's ruling, both Karadag and Mieraili have consistently denied the charges brought against them since their arrests. Their defense lawyers have indicated their intention to appeal the death sentences, citing various aspects of the case that they believe were not fully considered during the trial.
